Open Letter: Put Research Modernization NOW into Action

RMN Cover image

Decades of evidence have revealed that experiments on animals fail to reliably lead to effective treatments and cures for human diseases. The continued reliance on animal studies diverts funds from more promising tools and areas of research, delays the development of effective drugs and treatments, and limits our ability to protect and promote human health. The U.S. needs an exit strategy to move away from experiments on animals and toward human-relevant research.

We, the undersigned, endorse the roadmap described in PETA’s Research Modernization NOW, which calls for:

  1. Ending animal use in research areas in which animals have been demonstrated to be poor models of humans and their use has impeded scientific and medical progress
  2. Conducting systematic reviews of the efficacy of animal use to identify additional areas in which non-animal methods are available or animal use has failed to protect human health and can, therefore, be ended
  3. Redirecting funds from animal studies to reliable, non-animal methods
  4. Implementing a harm-benefit analysis system for animal studies that includes an ethical perspective and consideration of lifelong harm inflicted on animals
  5. Educating the scientific community about the benefits of non-animal approaches and training scientists to use them
